Darrel Ronald

Darrel brings a broad range of experiences across creative fields, in all scales of design, and has been recognized and awarded for his work across photography, architecture and urbanism. Darrel has studied photography and worked as an editor in newspaper publishing before completing a professional M.Arch degree in Architecture. Having worked on multi-disciplinary projects across North America and Europe, he brings a broad perspective and a high level of criticism.

Having worked in 19 countries across North America, Europe and Asia, he brings a broad perspective on global trends, emerging technologies, urban challenges, governance models and urban policy. This has led to a high level of strategic and critical thinking about how to make and manage cities and he regularly contributes to foresight workshops. In 2019 he started the Executive MBA program at the renowned IMD Lausanne.

From 2008 to 2012 he cofounded and operated the architecture practice Open Form Architecture in Montreal, Canada. Darrel has been a project leader for some of the largest urban projects in Europe while working with Rients Dijkstra at Maxwan architects + urbanists in Rotterdam, including the master plan for Project A101 in Moscow (RU). He has collaborated with Uberbau in Berlin (DE) on Hybrid Infrastructure designs, and the Astana World Expo 2017 competition. He was recently a Project Leader working with Winy Maas at MVRDV for both urban and architectural projects in Morocco and Germany.

In his last role as an Associate Partner & Senior Urban Designer at KCAP Rotterdam, he ran the Computational Design team in Rotterdam, lead applied research initiatives (also in collaboration with academia) and lead international large-scale, multi-disciplinary and highly complex urban design projects. Simultaneously he contributed to global acquisitions, client management and high-pressure competitions.

His career is transitioning towards urban technology, urban data science and computational tooling for cities. Recently he has taken two sabbaticals to improve his programming skills (Python, Javascript, web application frameworks, databases) and to dive deeper into core computer science concepts, data science, design patterns and algorithms. On a daily basis Darrel works with scripting and visual programming to restructure how KCAP works internally and on new products and services to offer clients.
